Kalsarikännit

A visit I was looking forward to a lot was the one to a vanilla farm on the island of Taha’a (combined with a visit to a rum distillery). After getting enough vanilla to last a lifetime we tasted their sugar cane and rum and gin, and all of their explanations were given with a beautiful open smile and you could see they were very proud of their product, and justifiably so, as the rum was delicious! The captain of the ship told us not to get kalsarikänniton on our visit, which is apparently Finnish for “getting drunk at home in your underwear with no intention to go out” and its one of those words I am happy to have learned. Responsible sailors that we are, we did not go kalsarikännit.
