I think I have discovered the secret- the single most extraordinary component of this voyage!
It goes far beyond the obvious (I mean we're SAILING TO ANTARCTICA on a gorgeous TALL SHIP for a start.) We're surrounded by an incredibly personable and helpful crew and a wonderful collection of fun-loving fellow passengers. We're fed fine meals 3 times a day, taught sailing techniques and fascinating area history, and make daily landings to view breathtaking scenery and get "up close and personal" with delightfully captivating animals. The whole setup is the stuff of dreams, but what sets it apart is the incredible Spirit of Adventure!
This morning we sailed south as far as we could go, 65°22.8'S 64° 01.9' W, further than the ship had ever gone before through uncharted waters (not a figure of speech - I mean literally uncharted!). The excitement of the captain, chief mate, crew, and guides (especially the guides!) was palpable. There was a real "kid in a candy store" feel throughout the ship.
I honestly don't think any description can capture the experience, but I do hope that whatever circumstances (read: opportunities) life may present in the future- outwardly enticing or not - can be met with the same sense of adventure that this amazing continent seems to spawn!
